GREEN IS GOOD FOR YOU moray eels and iguanas, oh my!
Moray eels are not something one encounters very often. When diving in warm waters, you might come across one, head poking out from under a rock or ledge, swaying with the current. They are menacing at first glance, their mouth slightly open, revealing an intimidating set of small, sharp teeth. So, I was astonished when I glanced down into the water from our dock one morning recently and saw a 3-foot Green Moray swim by!
It wove its way through the turtle grass, tail undulating back and forth, swiftly gliding by.
I had to paint it... and I added a Sergeant Major Damselfish, hiding in the grass behind the eel, thus inspiring the name of the piece, "Damsel in Distress".
It is currently hanging in the Key West Member's Show at The Studios of Key West.
Such serendipitous sightings bring a marvelous sense of wonder to our lives when we put ourselves in that path of possibility by getting outside and paying attention to the world around us.
We’re all intrinsically aware that “Green is good for you, and being outside, or living in restorative environments, helps us re-focus and function better mentally, in addition to reducing stress and improving our health. We can fill our home with plants and nature-oriented art and textiles (hint, hint!)
to create a nurturing space. Most importantly, we gotta get out the door and take in the action that's happening behind the scenes during our busy days.
Observing our natural environment reminds us of the magical world of wonder we are so fortunate to inhabit. Simply watching the birds and squirrels outside our window can foster a sense of peace and order in the world that might otherwise be missing.
Who knows what you might see during a short walk in the woods on a snowy day?
During a chilly spell in the Keys, one might witness an Iguana falling from a tree.
This really happens! Huge Spanish lime trees with giant canopies and long limbs are a favorite hangout for these primordial critters. When cold, they lose their grip on the branch and plummet far to the ground below. The fall does not kill them, but, stunned,
they suddenly pop up onto their toes and scurry away like cartoon characters.
And we carry on with our day, enriched by such a sighting with a smile on our face.
